While on holiday in Northumberland take a look at a massive ruined castle set on a beautiful stretch of coastline, this is Dunstanburgh Castle now managed by English Heritage, it was once one of the largest and grandest castles in the North East of England. Check the opening times before you set off from one of our holiday cottages nearby to make sure you don’t have a wasted journey. Standing on a remote headland the castle was besieged twice and captured by Yorkist forces then fell into decay, you can still see the twin-towered keep while the views from the coastline are something out of this world, holiday cottages near Dunstanburgh Castle are perfect for exploring this exciting, wild area.
If you travel six miles north-east of Alnwick you’ll come to Craster which is a small fishing village famous for its kippers, traditional fishing boats and friendly people. The nineteenth century harbour was built specifically for the herring fishery and curing sheds that produce the kippers we know and still love to eat today. We offer great holiday cottages in nearby locations so you can visit Craster and eat locally caught fish or lobster at one of the many inns. Enjoy kipper pate, homemade crab soup and crab sandwiches too if you’re feeling peckish.
